About Polraen Country House Hotel near Looe
We are often asked about the history of Polraen Country House Hotel.
Reputedly built as a coaching inn circa 1740, it remained part of the Morval Estate until sold to Peter Bessell, Liberal MP for South East Cornwall in the 1960s. Following a media scandal during the infamous conspiracy trial of the former Liberal Party Leader Jeremy Thorpe, Peter Bessell became bankrupt and fled abroad. Polraen was sold back to the Morval Estate but quickly changed hands and was converted to a small hotel in the 1970s.
In the last 10 years, under the ownership of Gill & Martin Bridges, significant refurbishment was required to transform the hotel to offer a high standard of accommodation.
Original features include an old range, window shutters, and log fires, whilst period paints and cushioned window seats emphasize its Cornish country charm.
