Eco-Friendly B&B
Our Environmental Policy
Polraen Country House Hotel aims to be a sustainable tourism business: environmentally aware, seeking ways to reduce our carbon footprint and to run our hotel without generating the potential for harmful consequences from tourism.
Genuinely 'giving back'
This is an easy claim, but we genuinely do ‘give back’ by investing our time in helpiing to run the Looe Marine Conservation Group. Gill received a Volunteering Appreciation Award in 2016 from Volunteer Cornwall for her role as then Chair. Gill and daughter Amelia (now Chair) continue to hold committee roles helping to organise local beach cleans, public events and educational campaigns.
In turn, we encourage our guests to enjoy their holiday in Cornwall considerate of the impact they may have on the local heritage, culture, community and the environment. We adopt recycling and apply housekeeping routines and make purchasing decisions which reflect care and consideration for our environment. So what does this mean?
- Our bathroom toiletries are dispensed in ecopumps which are less wasteful, don’t block pipes and use less packaging.
- Our loo paper is made from recycled paper sources.
- We have a towel change policy to reduce the amount of laundry and detergents used
- If your bedroom lights are slow to generate a bright light, it’s because they are low energy.
- We encourage guests to turn bedroom radiators down and lights off when not in your room.
- We actively encourage our guests to use public transport and assist with timetables.
- We buy local produce, helping to support local Cornish businesses and reduce food miles
- We are recognised as an eco-friendly business by the South East Cornwall Tourism Association, which recognises the improvements we have made to reduce the impact of our business and our guests on the environment.
- We are members of Coast – a Cornish based ‘one planet tourism network.
- We have participated in the Green Foundation Course at the Eden Project.
- We actively participate in the running of the Looe Marine Conservation Group, a well-established volunteer group affiliated to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust.
- We have many plants in our garden to attract bees and butterflies and leave some areas wild.
- We take care of hedgehogs by providing the necessary habitat and never using slug pellets.
- We occasionally feed the pheasants and provide a sanctuary for them during shooting season.
